Overlooked Car Maintenance Tips That Could Save Your Life

More people than ever are concerned with health and safety, and that extends to road safety as much as other aspects. This is reflected by the fact that the worldwide market for auto repair and maintenance is expected to jump in value from $690 billion in 2021 all the way to $879.4 billion by 2025, according to the latest report by Research and Markets. Everyone is intent on making their vehicles as road-worthy as can be, doing everything from finding inexpensive ways to patch up hazardous wear to purchasing vehicles with the most advanced safety tech money can buy. But there are aspects of car maintenance that even seasoned car owners may overlook. You’d do well not to do the same, as it can be a costly, and sometimes deadly, mistake.

Replace Your Brake Fluid

Overlooked Car Maintenance Tips

This may seem like a no-brainer to some, but you might be surprised how many car owners neglect to conduct proper brake fluid maintenance. It’s crucial to replace brake fluid every two years, or however often your car’s manufacturer recommends. Brake fluid starts accumulating moisture the very moment it’s put into the hydraulic brake system, causing rust or brake failure due to a lowered boiling point.

Give the Undercarriage a Proper Washing

A common thing that people who wash their own cars do is reach under and hose it down for a minute or so and call it a day. This isn’t ideal, even if you barely use your car. If you drive around a lot, this practice can lead to a whole lot of expense on your part, and possibly even an accident, especially if you live in an area with a lot of mud and rain or drive a low car. All of that can easily corrode the metal of your undercarriage, as well as your muffler and any wiring contained within. If you prefer to wash your car yourself, consider purchasing car ramps so you can give the undercarriage the attention it needs. There are even low profile car ramps for those who prefer vehicles that sit closer to the ground.  Those need undercarriage cleaning more than most other cars, considering that they receive much more mud and water than vehicles with average ground clearance.

Change Out Your Air Filter

Any car technician worth his salt has probably recommended that you change your air filters when you take your car in for maintenance. This isn’t some business tactic to get you to spend more. You actually need a clean air filter to ensure that your engine hums along as smoothly as possible. Even the tiniest bit of dust can accumulate and cause the whole vehicle to grind to a halt, possibly even damaging your engine in the process. When you consider the cost of repairing an engine, paying a little extra for an air filter sounds a lot more appealing. If you’re still in doubt, you can just check if the air filter is clean yourself. The owner’s manual should point you in the right direction. You can also find a copy online if you got the car second-hand.

Car maintenance can be a hassle, but keep in mind the reason it’s necessary. It can save you a lot of money, but more importantly, it vastly decreases the likelihood of vehicular failure leading to a terrible accident.
